Budget cuts leave some staff worried
The 6.3 million dollar cut could be responsible for the loss of an estimated 100 jobs across the Centennial district. And of those jobs, 11 of them are teachers at CHS.

Seven period day proposed for next year
As the recent recession continues to damage the United States’ economy, Oregon schools are beginning to feel the repercussions of funding loss. Due to recent necessity to reduce Centennial’s budget by $6 million to $10 million, the district office as well as administrators have begun searching for ways to uphold the current atmosphere of CHS while cutting teaching staff and other activities. One of the many plans discussed is that of the high school turning to a seven period day.

Centennial’s new budget proposal
With the current economic crisis, Centennial faces its own budget deficit facing the 2009-2010 school year. The latest estimations show that the Centennial School District is going to face at least a 10% loss in funding from the federal government, with more money expected to be removed from the budget before the end of this school year.

Centennial high school held its junior/senior prom at the Tiffany Center on April 11 amid discussion among students, teachers and administrators about the dancing contract, the dancing rules, and the pre-determined play-list.

Dangers of drunk driving presented to seniors
During the week of April sixth, twenty-six CHS seniors went through the process of dying in a car crash because of a drunk driver to teach the student body the dangers of destructive decisions.

FBLA members succeed at state
On Wednesday April 8, 63 members of FBLA [Future Business Leaders of America] traveled to the Portland Convention Center to compete for State. Out of the 63, 12 of them won first place in their respective events.

Repercussions of the recent economic crisis have been felt on the federal level, and also on the state and local level. Businesses are failing, stocks are crashing and people all around are losing their jobs due to budget cuts. Bowl-a-thon raises $500 for Snow-Cap
Centennial High Schools’ Skills U.S.A. hosted a bowl-a-thon; bowling at the Rose Bowl to raise money for Snow-CAP on February 24. The goal was to raise $500 for the organization, and to help students at Centennial go to state competitions.

Earth Hour asks people to turn off their lights
March 28th at 8:30 PM, Earth Hour is expected to make history. What started as a global movement from Sydney, Australians showing that global warming is here and now, has now become world wide. 2.2 Million people in Sydney decided to turn off their lights for only one hour, hoping to prove that the initiative people take to care about the environment, can be huge.

Many Centennial students have noticed a young man being wheeled around in a wheelchair, his foot wrapped in a cast. Not many connect this boy with the horrific event that happen only months ago at the popular teenage hang-out and dance club “The Zone”.

Drama Regionals finish with State qualifiers
On February 7th, regionals for drama were held at Gresham-Barlow High School.
There were 11 categories, in which each scene must be less than five minutes long. The competitors put on their scenes in front of three different judges.

Staff member loses everything in house fire
While most citzens in the city of Portland were enjoying the end of 2008, Centennial’s head night custodian was experiencing one of the most horrific nights of his life. Matt Moccardine‘s house was burned to the ground on New Year’s Eve, all his possessions were destroyed and there was over $75,000 in estimated damages.

Student tragically passes away
Amid the busy hustle of people in Centennial High School, one friendly, memorable face was sure to uplift student and staff through sincere amiability.
After twenty years of memorable experiences and twelve years of education, Andrew (Andy) Fuhrer passed away after complication from an open heart operation on the twenty-second of December.

Jordan Hailey gets first at Mr. Centennial
Mr. Centennial 2008 Male Beauty Pageant started off with a dance that had everyone laughing. The runners up, Tyler Johnson, Ryan Bohnstedt, Shayne Williams, Shane Maxwell, Jordan Hailey, Casey Nack, and Michael Hopp showed some skin and some moves as they danced to Jingle Bell Rock. Each boy had to have an act for Rock your Style Wear, Beach Wear, Talent, and Question & Answer.

Franklin Clark joins the CHS staff
As Centennial High School enters the second semester of 2008 - 2009, Franklin Clark will be joining the CHS staff as an English teacher. Clark will be teaching three Sophomore English classes, two English Essentials classes for those Freshman who failed first semester English, and Freshman and Sophomore credit recovery. He has been teaching since he was very young. Once, he set up miniature natural history museums in his room, and charged his family a quarter to take his tour.

Apprenticeships offered through CHS
Apprenticeships in Science & Engineering are back again this year, and there are more internships available than ever. The program helps students who are interested in pursuing careers in select science themes, be interns for mentors, depending on the science you are studying. Centennial uses the ASE program, apprenticeships in science and engineering, in which mentors look for, “bright, motivated high school students,” that are passionate about science and engineering.

Students cause problems for CHS neighbors
In recent weeks, many complaints have come from the residents of the homes adjacent to the pathway that leads from the main centennial high school through S.E. Haig Drive. These neighbors have made complaints specifically about students smoking, students swearing at them and their families, and students gathering on their property.

Childcare class raises money for young readers
The Skills USA chapter at CHS was planning activities to raise money for the SMART program. SMART stands for, Start Making A Reader Today. In Oregon, over 14,000 fourth graders read below the basic reading level and they are unable to understand what they are reading. SMART relies on financial and volunteer contributions from the communities it serves. The SMART program helps about 10,000 children each year with the help of people around the area.

Drastic funding cuts expected for Centennial
The state has announced an estimated $1 billion revenue shortfall in the next two years. The state needs to cut $140 million from the current budget, $75 million is assigned to be cut from education. Centennial would be losing $812,000 out of this years budget.

Dance cancellations in store for CHS
Once again Centennial High School’s student body loses yet another privilege as the administration sees it necessary to cancel almost all school dances. This consequence came about due to the students disregard for school policy which outlines the appropriate, and inappropriate, forms of dance etiquette. The decision has eliminated all future school dance functions save winter formal and prom.

Obama wins 2008 presidential election
After months of political campaigning and anticipation, the presidential race came to an end Tuesday November 4 with the announcement of 46 year old, Illinois senator, Barack Obama as the next president of the United States of America, and the first black president. The final tally of electoral votes showed that Obama received 53% of the votes while 71 year old, Arizona senator, John McCain collected a total of 47% of votes.

Retired custodian suffers fatal heart attack
Among the busy crowd of people in Centennial High School, one familiar friendly face was sure to always lighten a student or staff member’s day.
After nineteen years of work at Centennial, Barbara Houchin retired from her day custodial work and she passed away from a massive heart attack on the twenty-seventh of September.

Bond measure on November ballot could bring $83 million to school
Six months ago Centennial School District unanimously voted to initiate a bond that would allow $83.3 million to circulate through the District. In November this bond will be put on the ballot for all Centennial District residents to vote for or against.
